History-Maker Drops Only One Leg Against Chinese Qualifier Liu!!!
Brendan Dolan has safely made passage to Round 2 of the 2019 PDC World Championships, having easily accounted for Chinese qualifier Yuanjin Liu in this afternoon’s first round match-up.
The Fermanagh man never looked uncomfortable, not needing to come out of third gear as the inexperienced Liu struggled to produce any type of form at the oche.
Dolan took nine of the games ten legs, throwing a 180 in the first leg before breaking the Liu throw in the next, putting him in firm control of a set he’d eventually win, 3-0.
The second set came with much of the same, Liu failing to see a double in three legs as Dolan rattled another three legs off with consummate ease.
Pressed a little more at the start of the third set, Dolan checked out a magnificent 141 in the opening leg, before Liu eventually got a leg on the board to level the set at 1-1.
Dolan faced little resistance on his own throw and went within a leg of the match at 2-1, before Liu missed 9 darts from 137 to eventually hand the World Number 45 the match.
Up next for the Belcoo man, this year’s European Championship semi-finalist Joe Cullen, who will feel that his form this year might warrant making it past the 2nd Round at the Palace for the very first time. That game is scheduled for this Wednesday, with Dolan hoping he can do the same and be back in London after Christmas.
That leaves Daryl Gurney as the only Ulsterman yet to throw a dart in anger at this year’s tournament. The Waterside’s Superchin, up to Number 5 in the world after a fantastic last two years, harbours real ambition to go a long way, having reached the Quarter Finals in 2017 before under-performing against Big John Henderson last year.
The Derry man will have a close eye on proceedings tonight, as he awaits the winner from this evening’s clash between Ross Smith and Paul Lim.
